Wonderland Crafts Wooden Cross Stitch Kit FLW-077 – Tulips on Plywood with Stand

Wonderland Crafts FLW-077 Tulips finishes as a standing bunch of red tulips on a square carved base, just under five inches wide — the panel is cut around the closed cups and the long leaves, so the outline is the flowers themselves. Ten or so crimson blooms sit on straight stems over blue-green foliage that fans out on both sides, in a rounded pot with a cream band. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood: the board arrives shaped and drilled, the stitches go into holes that are already there, and the finished panel needs no frame, hoop or stretching.

Working on Plywood

Tulip cups are simple shapes, which means any wobble in the outline shows immediately — on a drilled grid there is none, because the holes were placed by the cutter and not by your counting. The count is 14, the usual Aida spacing, easy to work quickly through the large solid areas of petal. Nineteen shades are split unevenly: the reds run from bright scarlet on the lit side of each bloom to deep wine in the shadows, and the leaves take a range of greens and blue-greens where they cross over one another. The design is single-sided, so the reverse of the panel remains open while you stitch and gets faced with the felt or foam supplied before it goes into the stand.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

Seventy by sixty-four stitches, quick enough to finish in a couple of sittings, and it stands upright the moment it is assembled. Red tulips make this the obvious one in the series for Valentine's Day, an anniversary or Mother's Day — though there is nothing dated about it, so it can stay out well past spring.
