Wonderland Crafts FLW-073 Hydrangea is a potted plant that never needs watering — a stitched panel cut around the shape of the blooms, set upright in a round carved stand, about four and a half inches across when finished. The design is a full hydrangea in a terracotta pot: mophead clusters in blue, lilac and dusty pink packed against broad green leaves. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood, so instead of fabric you stitch into a rigid pre-drilled board, and the piece is complete as soon as the last stitch is in — no hooping, no stretching, no framing.

Working on Plywood

The panel is cut around the outline of the plant, so the edge of the work is already the edge of the finished object — the ragged silhouette of leaves and petals is done for you, and the drilled holes keep every stitch on grid inside it. It is worked at 14 count, standard Aida density, easy on the eyes over a large area of close shading. Twenty shades is what a hydrangea takes: each floret head shifts from pale to saturated across only a few stitches, and the greens do the same across the leaves, so the flowers look massed rather than printed. Single-sided design — the back stays open while you work, then takes the felt or foam included in the kit before the piece goes into the stand.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

Sixty-four by sixty-three stitches, and it ends as a small standing plant for a windowsill, a desk or a bathroom shelf rather than a panel waiting on a frame. Nothing about it is seasonal, so it stays out all year.
