Wonderland Crafts FLW-076 Daisies gives you a pot of daisies that stands upright on a carved square base, four and a half inches across, with the panel cut to follow the scalloped edge of the outer petals. A dozen white flowers with yellow centres open in every direction over feathery green foliage, above a banded terracotta pot. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood — rigid board instead of fabric, holes drilled to the chart before the kit is packed, and no hooping, stretching or framing at any point.

Working on Plywood

White flowers are the hardest thing to keep legible when petals overlap, and a fixed drilled grid helps: each petal keeps its exact width, so the ones in front stay in front. The count is 14, standard Aida density, which suits the fine detail of the petal tips without needing magnification. Sixteen shades, and a surprising number of them are barely-white — cream, ivory, palest grey and blue-white — because that is what separates one bloom from the next; the yellows and greens take comparatively few. This is a single-sided design: the reverse stays open while you work, then takes the felt or foam included in the kit before the panel is fitted into the stand.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

Sixty-four by sixty-one stitches and it is done, standing on the base with nothing left to finish. Daisies are as neutral as a motif gets, so this one sits comfortably in a kitchen, a bathroom or a bedroom year-round, and it works as a small thank-you gift when flowers themselves would only last a week.
