Wonderland Crafts FLW-068 Evening Lights finishes as a standing canal-street scene with two carved lamp posts flanking it and a stone planter at the kerb, the whole row set into a cobbled base. Four narrow gabled houses stand shoulder to shoulder — dusty rose, deep blue, buttercup yellow and mauve — with every window lit from inside and trees showing between the rooflines. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood: the façade comes as one cut panel with the holes drilled through, the lamps and paving as separate wooden parts, so nothing needs stretching, hooping or framing.

Working on Plywood

Because the grid is drilled and not counted, the four façades keep their proportions and the window rows stay aligned right across seventy-eight stitches — the kind of accuracy that is fiddly to hold on fabric over that width. It is worked at 14 count, the same density as standard Aida, so the small panes and shutters remain easy to read. Twenty-four shades sounds like a great many for a piece this size, but four buildings in four colours already accounts for half of them, and the rest go into the lit windows: each one is worked in warm creams and golds against cool wall tones, which is what makes the row look like dusk rather than daylight. The design is single-sided, so the back of the panel stays open while you stitch and is covered with the felt or foam supplied before you set it into the base.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

A few evenings of work with a standing object at the end rather than a panel waiting on a frame. It has no seasonal cue at all, so it stays on the shelf year-round, and it looks well next to a lamp where the stitched light in the windows picks up the real one.
