Wonderland Crafts FLW-072 Little Witch In Purple comes out as a small seated figure on its own base, quiet rather than spooky — a girl sitting cross-legged with her eyes closed under an oversized purple hat scattered with stars, a yellow rose pinned to the band and silver-grey hair falling past her shoulders. A lit jack-o'-lantern is stitched as a separate piece at her side, and the ground she sits on is strewn with wrapped sweets. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood: figure, pumpkin and base are all cut shapes with the holes drilled in advance, so the wood does the work of fabric, hoop and frame together.

Working on Plywood

With the holes drilled to a fixed step, the stitches sit level across the wide brim of the hat and the folds of the robe stay where the chart draws them — no easing, no measuring, no distortion in a large single-colour area. It is 14 count, the density most stitchers work at on Aida, comfortable for long sessions. Twenty shades is what the purple needs: the hat, the sleeves and the skirt run through violet, plum and lilac, and the silver hair takes several greys of its own, which is how a nearly monochrome design still shows depth. The base is stitched as well, so the scattered sweets are part of the piece. The design is single-sided — you work the front only, back it with the felt or foam supplied, then put the parts together.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

A square little project at 53 by 75 stitches, spread across separate panels so each one finishes fast and the whole thing ends up standing on a shelf. It suits a trick-or-treat table or a child's room, and it is a gentle version of Halloween for people who do not want anything ghoulish in the house.
