Wonderland Crafts FLW-070 Little Witch In Blue ends up as a standing figure just under four inches tall, sweet-faced rather than spooky — the sort of Halloween piece that can sit on a child's shelf or a desk without frightening anyone. A big-eyed girl in a blue polka-dot hat and a blue dress with a white collar holds a broom, her long copper hair filling most of the panel, and a ginger cat with its tail curled upright is stitched as a separate piece beside her. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood: figure, cat and base come as cut shapes with the holes drilled through, and the wood replaces fabric, hoop and frame completely.

Working on Plywood

The drilled grid is what makes a face this small work: the eyes, the mouth and the pale highlights land on exact holes, so the expression comes out as drawn instead of drifting a stitch either way. It is worked at 14 count, standard Aida spacing, comfortable to see without magnification. Nineteen shades mostly go into the hair and the hat — the copper runs from pale gold to deep amber, and the blue does the same from midnight to sky, which is what gives the cartoon style its rounded, shaded look. The base is stitched as well as the figure, so the ground she stands on is part of the work. This is a single-sided design: the reverse of each piece stays open while you stitch and is backed with the felt or foam from the kit before assembly.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

Tall and narrow at 43 by 96, spread over separate pieces that each finish quickly — you see whole sections completed rather than inching across one big panel.
