Wonderland Crafts FLW-071 Little Witch In Green stands about four inches high when it is done — a woodland-flavoured Halloween figure that reads more storybook than scary, so it can stay out through the whole autumn rather than just the last week of October. A blonde girl with green eyes holds a red apple, dressed in a laced green bodice and a wide-brimmed pointed hat; a red fly agaric with white spots is stitched as a separate piece beside her, and the ground she stands on carries cobwebs and small spiders. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood — every piece, base included, comes cut to shape with the stitch holes drilled, so there is no fabric, no hoop and nothing to frame afterwards.

Working on Plywood

On a face this size a single misplaced stitch changes the expression, and the drilled grid removes that risk entirely — the eyes, the smile and the highlights in the hair go exactly where the chart puts them. The count is 14, the same as ordinary Aida, so the holes stay easy to find hour after hour. Eighteen shades is a lot of green: hat, bodice and cloak each take their own range, which is what keeps them from merging into one flat mass, and the blonde hair and red apple use the rest. The base is stitched too, so the mossy ground and the webs are part of the work rather than a plain wooden platform. Single-sided design — the reverse stays open while you stitch and gets faced with the felt or foam included before the pieces are assembled.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

Split across a few small panels, it moves faster than 47 by 84 stitches sounds, and it finishes standing on a shelf instead of stalling in a project bag.
