Wonderland Crafts FLW-056 Hamster With Candy Cane hangs on the tree straight off the needle — the cord hole is drilled through the top of the shape, so the piece needs no mounting once the stitching is done. The design is a hamster standing upright, holding a red-and-white striped candy cane almost as tall as he is, with a sprig of holly tucked behind one ear. It is a counted cross stitch kit on laser-cut plywood: the board is cut to the outline of the animal, the stitch holes are pre-drilled, and the rigid base takes the place of fabric, hoop and stretching.

Working on Plywood

There is no counting of threads and no drifting rows here — the hole is where the stitch goes, and the spacing was set when the board was cut. The count is 14, the density most stitchers already know from Aida, so the grid reads clearly without a magnifier. Twelve shades carry the brown-and-cream coat and the pink of the candy cane, and six beads finish the holly berries with a bit of shine that thread alone does not give. The design is single-sided: the reverse stays open as you stitch, and the felt or foam included in the kit is cut to shape and glued over the back at the end.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.

Under two thousand stitches, so it is done in a sitting or two and goes straight onto the branch instead of into the pile of unfinished starts. Good for a hamster or guinea pig owner, and light enough to tie onto a wrapped parcel as a decoration the recipient keeps.
