Size 28 is the finest common cross stitch needle — thinner and shorter than the standard size 26, it passes through tighter fabric holes without dragging or distorting the weave. This makes it the right pick for higher-count fabrics like 18–20 ct Aida and 36+ ct evenweave or linen, where a size 26 can feel snug. These are tapestry-style needles with a blunt rounded tip and a gold-plated eye. The blunt tip slides between fabric threads without splitting them, and the gold-plated eye adds contrast against the silver shaft for easier threading. The trade-off with a finer needle is that the eye is smaller, so threading with 3+ strands can be tight — size 28 works best with 1–2 strands of stranded cotton. For 14–16 ct Aida or when using more strands, the size 26 from the same line is the more comfortable choice.
