Wonderland Crafts FLW-049 Snow Globe, Sky Edition is a counted cross stitch and beadwork kit on laser-cut plywood. Instead of fabric, you stitch into a rigid wooden shape with the holes already drilled — the piece is the finished object, so there is no hoop, no stretching, no framing and no finishing work at the end. The plywood is cut in the shape of a snow globe: a nutcracker in a blue coat with gold braid and a red crowned hat stands with his sceptre between two carved columns, all worked in a cool blue and silver palette. Clear beads sit across the top of the dome as falling snow. The stitched dome sits on an engraved wooden base, so the finished piece stands upright like a real snow globe.

Working on Plywood

Each stitch goes through a pre-drilled hole, so the spacing is fixed and the stitches sit evenly — plywood is a forgiving base even if you have never stitched on anything but fabric. This one is worked at 14 count, the same density most stitchers are used to on Aida, so it is comfortable on the eyes and easy to read from the chart. With twenty-nine shades, the columns, the coat and the snowy ground are built up in fine gradations, which is what gives the piece its painted, almost illustrated look rather than a flat blocked-in one. The design is single-sided, so the reverse stays open while you work and your thread carries are visible from behind. The kit includes felt or foam for the back: once the stitching is finished, cut it to shape and glue it on for a clean reverse, then set the dome into its base.

Unlike fabric work, the finished piece must stay dry. Do not wash, soak or steam it — plywood warps and the surface tint can stain. Dust with a soft dry brush and keep it away from damp spots such as bathrooms and window sills.
